A Health And Physical Education Teacher Teaches Her Pupils About The Relevance Of Alcohol Addiction Signs
Miss Jackson was a health teacher at the most popular co-ed high school in the local community. Although she had been teaching for only two years, she had already secured a reputation as a person with teaching approaches that encouraged and stimulated the students in her class to think and to learn.
As an illustration, one Tuesday afternoon she addressed the students in her class and stated the following: "For the next three or four days we are going to learn about some commonplace alcoholism signs from a more broad-based point of view and we are also going to learn about some of the most common signs of alcoholism from a more detailed standpoint."
"Not all of these alcoholism warning signs will definitely show that an individual with a drinking problem is a person who is addicted to alcohol, but the more signs that a person manifests, the more likely it is that he or she is an alcohol dependent individual."
Miss Jackson then told the class that each student would be held responsible for researching two alcohol addiction signs and then presenting his or her findings to the other members in the class by way of a eight minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcohol dependency signs that were discussed and presented in class and in the presentations. Miss Jackson then asked the pupils in her class to study the list and rank the top six alcohol dependency signs that were most indicative of alcoholism. After approximately five minutes, Miss Jackson collected the pieces of paper and told the students in her class that after she assesses the results, she will present her findings the morning of the next school day.
Miss Jackson told her students to look over the information on the sheet of paper she passed out and then to raise their hand if they had any questions, issues, or concerns. Within 30 or 40 seconds, virtually everyone in the class raised her or his hand. It was obvious that the students had some questions, issues, or concerns about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism specialists. For instance, almost every person in the classroom disagreed with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism authorities, to be exact, "Do you feel awfully ill when you stop drinking?"
Miss Jackson then informed the students in her class why this answer was the most straightforward indicator of alcoholism. She stressed the fact that the foremost difference between alcoholism and alcohol abuse is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcoholism and not with alcohol abuse.
Primarily this means that when a person who is addicted to alcohol suddenly stops drinking, he or she will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the relevance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the individual who is addicted to alcohol, the students started to recognize the basic difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism.
A few minutes later the bell rang, indicating the end of the class. Based on the enthusiasm exhibited by the pupils when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Jackson knew that she had motivated and encouraged the pupils in her classroom to stop and think about a significant health issue and social problem that exists in our society.
