A Young Gentleman's Excessive Drinking Results In A DWI And Time Locked Up In Jail

Richard had a very hard time maintaining a job. As a matter of fact, due to his lethargy and lack of motivation, he was out of a job far more frequently than he was gainfully employed. And when he did get a job, he had a very hard time getting to work when his shift started, he often received less than positive performance appraisals, and he called off sick so habitually that he usually got fired a few weeks after he started working.

To no one's surprise, one of the consequences of Richard's appalling employment history was the fact that he was without much money from day-to-day. In spite of Richard's less than great work history and financial misbehavior, conversely, one way or another he managed to drink in a hazardous manner from day-to-day.

So it came as no big surprise when Richard received a second DUI. When he went to court, the magistrate stated to Richard that his alcohol-related behavior was awful and, consequently, he was going to sentence Richard to serve eleven months in jail.

During his time in jail, Richard was required to learn more about alcoholism facts such as alcohol related consequence and alcohol deaths, about the unhealthy outcomes of irresponsible and hazardous drinking, and he was required to get alcohol therapy. The judge emphasized the fact that unless Richard receives quality alcohol rehab and learns how to live a life of sobriety, he will probably be spending a considerable amount of time in jail.

Richard stated that he understood what the judge was declaring but he still claimed that incarceration was not the best punishment. The magistrate disagreed and proclaimed that it was his responsibility to keep people off the streets who drink and drive and who get arrested for one or more DUIs. To validate this view, the judge articulated some venerable, extensively researched alcohol abuse and alcoholism facts and statistics that underscored some of the adverse consequences that are related to irresponsible and hazardous drinking such as alcohol related deaths.

Even though Richard realized that he drank excessively, he never thought that he was a person who was addicted to alcohol. So it was a real bombshell when Richard began experiencing chronic alcoholism symptoms and alcohol withdrawal symptoms nearly two hours after getting incarcerated.

To manage his alcohol withdrawals in a safe and sound manner, Richard was life flighted to a rehabilitation facility for alcohol detox and then returned to the city jail. While in jail Richard got alcohol treatment but because he got this therapy as something that was imposed upon him, he failed to take ownership of his excessive and abusive drinking.

When his time in the municipal jail was completed, the judge told Richard that he would be under close scrutiny and would be mandated to take periodic urine alcohol tests. After hearing how Richard failed to take ownership of his drinking problem and how he unenthusiastically followed the treatment protocol while in jail, the judge knew that it was just a matter of time before he would be seeing Richard once again in court about his irresponsible and abusive drinking behavior.

As the judge reflected on Richard's situation, he couldn't help but think about how some individuals never "connect the dots" and learn how to live in a responsible manner.
